What To Do During a Power Outage at the Campground

Power outages at Aspen Grove Campground are not frequent, but they can happen during storms. When they do, they’re usually temporary—but being prepared can make a big difference in your comfort and safety.

Here’s what to know and what to do.

During an Outage: What You Should Do

1. Stay in place or move to designated Severe Weather Shelter if necessary
If the outage is weather-related, remain in your camper or vehicle until conditions improve. If conditions get scary-bad, proceed to the Severe Weather Shelter locations if it is safe to do so. Severe Weather Shelter locations in Aspen Grove Campground are the Bathhouse, Laundry Room, and Camp Store

2. Use safe lighting only
Stick to flashlights or battery-powered lights. Avoid open flames inside campers (candles can be a fire hazard).

3. Limit opening your fridge
Keep fridge and cooler doors closed as much as possible to preserve food.

4. Check on your group
Make sure everyone knows where flashlights are and has what they need.

5. Be cautious moving around the park
It will be darker than usual, even though Aspen Grove had many solar powered street lights. Watch for uneven ground, obstacles, and vehicles.

What Not to Do

  • Don’t assume the issue is your individual site—if multiple sites are out, it’s likely a broader outage
  • Don’t attempt to access electrical hookups or panels
  • Don’t overload generators (if you’re using one)
  • Don’t run generators too close to campers (carbon monoxide risk)

Recommended Items to Have On Hand

We strongly recommend packing a few basics in case of outages:

Lighting & Power

  • Flashlights (with fresh batteries)
  • Headlamps
  • Portable phone charger / power bank
  • Solar charger or small solar panel

Food & Comfort

  • Ice or well-stocked cooler
  • Non-perishable snacks
  • Extra blankets or warm clothing

Practical Extras

  • Battery-powered radio (for weather updates)
  • First aid kit
  • Bug spray (if windows are open more than usual)

Entertainment (especially for kids)

  • Cards or small board games, books or magazine (all available at the Free Library located in the Laundry Room)

Campfires & Cooking

If weather conditions allow and there are no fire restrictions:

  • Campfires can be used for light and cooking
  • Always follow campground fire rules
  • Never leave a fire unattended

What to Expect

  • Most outages are momentary, or resolved within minutes
  • Severe weather may delay restoration
  • Staff are aware and working on the issue—you do not need to report it unless it appears isolated to your site

When to Contact Staff

Please let us know if:

  • Only your site has lost power
  • You notice damaged electrical equipment
  • There is a safety concern

Power outages are part of camping occasionally—but with a little preparation, they don’t have to disrupt your trip.

A flashlight, a plan, and a bit of patience go a long way.
