⚠️ Bear Advisory: Two black bears have been observed in the area within the past week. Please follow the bear safety guidelines above and report any sightings to campground staff. (June 18th 2026)
Over the past two weeks, there have been two reported black bear sightings in and around the campground area. While seeing wildlife can be an exciting part of the camping experience, it is important that all guests take precautions to help keep both people and bears safe.
Why Bears Visit Campgrounds
Black bears have an excellent sense of smell and are constantly searching for food. Campgrounds can unintentionally attract bears through:
- Unattended food or coolers
- Garbage and recycling
- Pet food and bird seed
- Greasy BBQs and cooking equipment
- Food scraps left around campsites
Once a bear discovers an easy food source, it is likely to return. The best way to prevent bear encounters is to eliminate anything that may attract them.
Campground Bear Safety Tips
Keep a Clean Campsite
- Store all food securely when not in use.
- Never leave coolers, snacks, or beverages unattended.
- Clean cooking areas immediately after meals.
- Dispose of garbage in designated receptacles
Manage Pet Food
- Feed pets during scheduled meal times only.
- Do not leave pet food or water dishes out overnight.
- Store pet food securely inside your RV, camper, or vehicle.
Secure Garbage
- Use campground garbage bins and ensure lids are closed.
- Never leave garbage bags outside overnight.
- Do not burn food waste in campfires.
Be Aware of Your Surroundings
- Keep children within sight.
- Walk pets on a leash.
- Be especially alert during early morning and evening hours when bears are often more active.
If You See a Bear
If you spot a bear:
- Stay calm.
- Keep a safe distance.
- Do not approach the bear for photos.
- Never feed a bear.
- Give the bear plenty of space and a clear route to leave.
- Report the sighting to campground staff.
Most black bears prefer to avoid people and will move away if given the opportunity.
If a Bear Approaches Your Campsite
- Make yourself appear large.
- Speak in a firm, calm voice.
- Back away slowly.
- Do not run.
- Gather children and pets immediately.
- Move into a vehicle, RV, or building if necessary.
Help Keep Wildlife Wild
Bears that become accustomed to human food can lose their natural fear of people, creating dangerous situations for both visitors and the bears themselves. By keeping campsites clean and removing attractants, we can help ensure that wildlife remains wild and that everyone enjoys a safe camping experience.
Thank you for helping keep Aspen Grove Campground safe for our guests and the wildlife that call this area home.
